Meet the buyer personas

Nine ready-to-use personas, each with its own characteristics, a typical line, what drives them and where reps usually go wrong. Plus a tenth: a character you supply yourself.

Portrait of The Bargain Hunter, an AI buyer persona

01

The Bargain Hunter

A price-focused customer looking for deals

  • Price-focused
  • Negotiator
  • Comparison-driven
  • Value-skeptical
“Look, I’ve seen the same thing for less. Is that really your best price?”
What drives them
Getting the best possible deal. Value is always relative to the alternatives, so a fair price that isn’t the lowest still feels like a loss.
How to spot them
Short, transactional sentences full of comparisons, percentages and bottom lines. Pushback often starts with “Well…” or “Look…”.
What reps practice
Discussing price openly and defending value without caving on discounts.
The trap
Dodging price with “we’ll get to that later”. Every concession you give away teaches them to push harder.
Portrait of The Critical Researcher, an AI buyer persona

02

The Critical Researcher

A detail-oriented customer who asks tough questions

  • Analytical
  • Fact-checker
  • Evidence-driven
  • Slow to commit
“Based on what? Where does that number come from?”
What drives them
Deciding on evidence, not claims. Most vendor pitches sound like marketing to her until proven otherwise.
How to spot them
Precise, measured sentences and long thinking pauses. She lets you finish, then takes your argument apart.
What reps practice
Backing up every claim with verifiable data, relevant case studies and solid answers to technical questions.
The trap
Buzzwords like “industry-leading”, and pushing for a decision before she has verified the key claims.
Portrait of The Enthusiastic but Distracted, an AI buyer persona

03

The Enthusiastic but Distracted

An interested but easily sidetracked customer

  • Warm
  • Curious
  • Easily sidetracked
  • Over-commits in the moment
“Oh, interesting! Wait, that reminds me, do you also do…?”
What drives them
Discovering new ideas. Her enthusiasm is wide but shallow, and it fades as soon as the call ends.
How to spot them
Long, tangential sentences that jump from topic to topic. She asks questions but moves on before the answer is finished.
What reps practice
Steering the conversation back on track and locking in a concrete next step before hanging up.
The trap
Mistaking her “yes, let’s do it!” for a commitment. “I’ll email you next week” means you’ve already lost her.
Portrait of The Hesitant Buyer, an AI buyer persona

04

The Hesitant Buyer

A careful customer who needs reassurance

  • Cautious
  • Risk-averse
  • Seeks validation
  • Slow decision-maker
“I’m not sure it’s the right time… has this worked for companies like ours?”
What drives them
Avoiding a bad decision. He is more afraid of choosing wrong than eager to choose right, and trusts consensus over his own judgment.
How to spot them
Soft, tentative language full of “maybe” and “I think”, and frequent requests for reassurance.
What reps practice
Patient listening, social proof and small, low-risk next steps.
The trap
Pushing for a same-call decision, or hearing “maybe later” and letting him drift instead of uncovering the concern behind it.
Portrait of The Impatient Customer, an AI buyer persona

05

The Impatient Customer

A busy customer who wants quick answers

  • Blunt
  • Time-protective
  • Low tolerance for pitches
  • Fast decisions only
“Okay. And? Get to the point.”
What drives them
Protecting his time. He isn’t hostile, just overloaded, and decides within seconds whether a call is worth it.
How to spot them
Clipped fragments, interruptions and evaluative silences. Small talk gets skipped.
What reps practice
Getting to the point within two sentences and stating value as a single, clear headline.
The trap
Rambling, feature walkthroughs and missing his impatience cues. He decides fast, or he’s gone.
Portrait of The Time-Conscious Decision Maker, an AI buyer persona

06

The Time-Conscious Decision Maker

A customer with limited time to decide

  • Structured
  • Efficient
  • Criteria-driven
  • Decisive when convinced
“I’ve got about ten minutes. Walk me through the business case.”
What drives them
Making good decisions efficiently against clear criteria: ROI, time-to-value, integration fit and strategic alignment. Disciplined, not impatient.
How to spot them
Structured, professional questions. She tells you how much time she has and recaps where the conversation stands.
What reps practice
Mapping value directly to her decision criteria and closing with a clear recommendation.
The trap
Vague answers and no clear advice. When her criteria are met she often decides on the first call, so be ready to ask.
Portrait of The Status-Quo Defender, an AI buyer persona

07

The Status-Quo Defender

A customer content with their current solution

  • Status-quo bias
  • Switching-cost focused
  • Incumbent-loyal
  • High bar to change
“We already have this handled. Why would we move off something that works?”
What drives them
Protecting a system that already works. Doing nothing is his strongest option, and the burden of proof sits entirely with you.
How to spot them
A settled, matter-of-fact tone and constant references to his current vendor or setup.
What reps practice
Uncovering a real gap in the current solution and showing that the gain outweighs the cost of switching.
The trap
Bad-mouthing his current vendor, or claiming “we do everything they do, plus more”. He only moves through a low-risk pilot.
Portrait of The Relationship-Driven Buyer, an AI buyer persona

08

The Relationship-Driven Buyer

A customer who buys on trust and connection

  • Relationship-first
  • Trust-driven
  • Warm
  • Rewards authenticity
“So how long have you been with them? Where are you based?”
What drives them
Buying from people she trusts. She reads for authenticity and can tell real rapport from a sales technique.
How to spot them
Warm, personal and conversational, opening with small talk. When something feels scripted she goes quiet and cool instead of objecting.
What reps practice
Building genuine rapport, listening closely and making the value personal.
The trap
Her “no” sounds like a “yes”. “Lovely talking to you, let’s stay in touch” is not a commitment.
Portrait of The Guarded Buyer, an AI buyer persona

09

The Guarded Buyer

A hostile customer at first, but opens up once you earn it

  • Defensive opener
  • Warms with trust
  • Composure test
  • Legitimacy-first
“Who is this? How did you get this number?”
What drives them
Protecting himself from unsolicited calls. The distrust is a filter, not his personality.
How to spot them
Clipped, faintly accusatory challenges at the start of the call. As trust builds, you can hear him thaw.
What reps practice
Staying composed under pressure and giving a specific, legitimate reason for the call, fast.
The trap
Over-apologizing, matching his edge with pressure, or asking for a commitment before he has thawed.

10

Your Custom Character

A buyer persona built around your own customers

  • Your buyer profile
  • Your objections
  • Your market
  • Co-created with Salessims
What it is
Is there a buyer your reps keep running into that isn’t on this list? You can supply that character yourself: a specific decision-maker, an industry-specific skeptic or the toughest customer your team knows.
How it's built
You share the buyer profile: who they are, what drives them, how they talk and which objections they raise. The Salessims team turns it into a full roleplay persona and fine-tunes it together with you until it sounds like the real thing.
Ideal for
Niche markets, specific roles (for example a critical CFO) and objections that are unique to your product.
Once it's live
Your custom character appears next to the standard personas in your team’s environment, with the same live voice calls and coaching feedback.

Look alike, sell differently

Some personas sound similar in the first minute. Reading them correctly is half the skill.

The Impatient Customer vs. The Time-Conscious Decision Maker

Both are short on time. The Impatient Customer wants one clear headline; the Time-Conscious Decision Maker wants a structured business case mapped to her criteria.

The Hesitant Buyer vs. The Relationship-Driven Buyer

Both are soft-spoken and rarely say a hard no. The Hesitant Buyer needs the risk taken away; the Relationship-Driven Buyer needs to trust the person.

The Guarded Buyer vs. The Impatient Customer

Both are curt. The Guarded Buyer is testing whether the call is legitimate and opens up once it is; the Impatient Customer is only testing whether you get to the point.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI buyer persona in Salessims?
A buyer persona is a distinct buyer personality the AI plays during a live voice roleplay. Each of the 9 personas has its own core drive, way of speaking, objection style and way of committing, so a call with the Bargain Hunter feels completely different from a call with the Guarded Buyer.
Which persona should a new rep start with?
Start with personas that reward the fundamentals: the Time-Conscious Decision Maker (clear structure) and the Hesitant Buyer (listening and reassurance). Once those feel comfortable, move on to tougher openings such as the Impatient Customer and the Guarded Buyer, and to the Status-Quo Defender for competitive deals.
Does the feedback take the persona into account?
Yes. The coaching report after each call knows which persona the rep spoke to and how that buyer type behaves. Handling the Bargain Hunter’s price pushback is judged differently from building trust with the Relationship-Driven Buyer. Every report includes an overall rating, strengths, areas for improvement, an objection-by-objection breakdown and concrete action items.
Can we add our own personas?
Yes. Alongside the 9 standard personas, you can supply your own custom character, for example a critical CFO for finance-heavy deals. You share the buyer profile and the Salessims team builds and fine-tunes the persona together with you. We also set up which personas your team sees.
